Combined influence of oceanic and atmospheric circulations on Greenland sea ice concentration

چکیده

Abstract. The amount and spatial extent of Greenland Sea (GS) ice are primarily controlled by the sea export across Fram Strait (FS) local seasonal formation, melting, dynamics. In this study, using satellite passive microwave observations, atmospheric a coupled ocean-sea reanalysis system, TOPAZ4, we show that both oceanic circulation in Nordic Seas (NS) act tandem to explain SIC variability south-western GS. Northerly wind anomalies associated with anomalously low level pressure (SLP) over NS reduce GS due westward Ekman drift ice. On other hand, positive stress curl strengthens cyclonic Gyre (GSG) central An intensified GSG may result stronger divergence surface cold fresh waters away from Both these processes can freshwater content weaken upper-ocean stratification At same time, warm saline Atlantic Water (AW) recirculated FS region circulation. Under weakly stratified conditions, enhanced vertical mixing subsurface AW inhibit new further reducing

Ice-dynamic projections of the Greenland ice sheet in response to atmospheric and oceanic warming

Continuing global warming will have a strong impact on the Greenland ice sheet in the coming centuries. During the last decade (2000–2010), both increased melt-water runoff and enhanced ice discharge from calving glaciers have contributed 0.6±0.1 mm yr to global sea-level rise, with a relative contribution of 60 and 40 % respectively. Here we use a higher-order ice flow model, spun up to presen...

Increasing Antarctic Sea Ice under Warming Atmospheric and Oceanic Conditions

Estimates of sea ice extent based on satellite observations show an increasing Antarctic sea ice cover from 1979 to 2004 even though in situ observations show a prevailing warming trend in both the atmosphere and the ocean. This riddle is explored here using a global multicategory thickness and enthalpy distribution sea ice model coupled to an ocean model. Forced by the NCEP–NCAR reanalysis dat...

Predictability of oceanic circulations

In this paper, we study the Navier-Stokes equation in which the unknown functions are the vorticity and the streamfunction. Our goal is to estimate the long-time innuence of a small error in the initial data. In order to do this, we write down the symmetrized linearized Navier-Stokes equation and we estimate the eigenvalues of the corresponding operator. A comparison between these estimates and...

Investigating the local-scale influence of sea ice on Greenland surface melt

Rapid decline in Arctic sea ice cover in the 21st century may have wide-reaching effects on the Arctic climate system, including the Greenland ice sheet mass balance. Here, we investigate whether local changes in sea ice around the Greenland ice sheet have had an impact on Greenland surface melt. Specifically, we investigate the relationship between sea ice concentration, the timing of melt ons...

Improving Multiyear Sea Ice Concentration Estimates with Sea Ice Drift

Multiyear ice (MYI) concentration can be retrieved from passive or active microwave remote sensing observations. One of the algorithms that combines both observations is the Environmental Canada Ice Concentration Extractor (ECICE). However, factors such as ridging, snow wetness and metamorphism can cause significant changes in brightness temperature and backscatter, leading to misidentification...
